BJP may spring a surprise in Adilabad

If the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes out with an impressive show in the April 16 elections as is expected in the post poll analysis, it will be mainly because the voters kept their attention focussed on the politics at national level and the ‘image’ of its candidate for Adilabad (ST) Parliamentary seat. Reports from different Assembly segments within the Lok Sabha constituency indicate the BJP was the beneficiary as large number of voters resorted to cross voting in favour of its MP candidate.

“Besides voters’ desire for a strong government at the Centre, our commitment to separate Telangana State also seems to have been received very well. Hinged on these assurances, our campaign percolated to the grass roots level evoking a good response from voters,” claims Gone Shyamsunder Rao, BJP’s Adilabad district president.

The BJP has never put up an impressive show in Adilabad district because of which it was put in the category of an ‘also ran’ in these elections.

In the past, only Vishnu Prakash Bajaj could get about 1.8 lakh votes in the general elections of 1998.

In the spiritually inclined Ade Tukaram, the BJP fielded a personality far removed from the murky politics. He is as well known in the Agency areas for organising pilgrimages to the famous Pandharpur centre in Maharashtra as for not wearing footwear for the last 23 years.

There are several hundreds of people in the district who follow his precept of abstinence.

The highest tally of for the BJP’s MP seat campaign is expected to come from Mudhole Assembly constituency evidently as the elections were held in the backdrop of the Bhainsa communal violence of October last year. The other Assembly segments from where the candidate is expecting votes are Adilabad, Boath (ST), Khanapur (ST), Asifabad (ST) and Sirpur.
