PRP, TDP pick holes in speech

The Praja Rajyam party chief, Mr K. Chiranjeevi, said that the development which the Congress is boasting about has not reached the poor. Describing the Governor’s speech in the Assembly as an “eye-wash”, Mr Chiranjeevi demanded an answer from the ruling party for the rising prices of essential commodities and about 7,500 farmers suicides in the last five years.

“If the Congress is really confident about development, it should also explain why rice costs Rs 35 a kg and why farmers are still continuing to commit suicide. The Governor’s speech did not focus on the real issues of the people,” Mr Chiranjeevi said.

The Telugu Desam leader, Mr P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Mr Ravula Chandrasekar Reddy, Mr Nagam Janardan Reddy were surprised that the Women’s Reservation Bill was not mentioned in the Governor’s speech.

Is Congress using Chiranjeevi to checkmate Chandrababu?

If Chiranjeevi’s recent actions are any indication one is sure to get this feeling. For instance, Chiranjeevi announced on Friday that the PRP would not contest from Tekkali. Chiranjeevi said this had to be viewed as a mark of respect for the deceased Congress MLA, who died before he could even administer the oath. This humanitarian gesture however was misinterpreted even by his party members. “Though it was a good gesture it would have been politically prudent for us to wait for the Congress to make the first move and then announce it,” said a Praja Rajyam MLA. On its part the Congress is delighted by the megastar’s gesture. Top advisers of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, have already drawn up a strategy to counter the TD chief through Mr. Chiranjeevi. “He should cut into the TD base more than what he did in the elections for us to be comfortable in the coming local body polls,” said a senior minister of the ruling party

Chiranjeevi wants Speaker to function like an ''umpire''

Praja Rajyam Party(PRP) debutant in politics Chiranjeevi today urged new Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy to act like an ''umpire'' during debates between ruling and opposition parties and facilitate more discussion on issues related to people.

''I came to know that you are a very good wicket-keeper in Cricket. I want you to be a good umpire in the House,'' the actor-turned-politician said in his maiden speech in the Assembly, sending the House into peals of laughter. Chiranjeevi is his party's floor leader.

Suggesting that the Speaker must exhibit sportsman spirit in the House, he urged allocation of more time for the Opposition to reflect the people's aspirations in the House.

The PRP had extended its support to Mr Reddy's candidature as Speaker,to continue the tradition of unanimous election to the post, he explained.

Expressing hope that the Speaker would be ''unbiased'' in his conduct, he compared the ruling and opposition benches to two wheels of a cart which had to function in a coordinated manner.

Chiranjeevi the MLA!

Chiranjeevi was the star attraction on the inaugural day of the 13th assembly session in Hyderabad. The actor-turned politician was welcomed warmly by the ruling and the opposition party members alike. When Chiranjeevi met Babu in the assembly corridor he smiled and welcomed him and inquired about his lunch arrangements. Babu gave him a terse and short reply with a forced smile. Chiranjeevi was later seen smiling and talking with Jayasudha. The two former actors shared a warm rapport even in their earlier professions. Chiranjeevi once again reassured the media that he will only indulge in constructive criticism and will not resort to wastage of assembly time. The other attraction was J C Diwakar Reddy in the unusual role of a protem speaker. Kiran Kumar Reddy was elected unopposed. The TDP’s much awaited challenge of his nomination simply did not materialize.

Chiru to talk to TD deserters

The Praja Rajyam chief, Mr K. Chiranjeevi, is trying to thwart the plans of the Telugu Desam, which is reportedly wooing its former leaders who are now in the PRP. Several former TDP leaders like, Mr T. Devender Goud, Tammineni Seetaram, Kala Venkata Rao, C. Ramachandraiah, Kotagiri Vidyadhara Rao, Bhooma Nagireddy, Sobha Nagireddy, Kottapalli Subbarayudu, Ganta Srinivasa Rao and others had joined the PR before the elections. However, only Sobha Nagireddy and Ganta Srinivasa Rao emerged victorious while others lost the polls.

The former TD leaders played a key role in defeating the TD in many districts even though they could not win on the PR tickets. For instance, Mr K. Yerrannaidu, was defeated in Srikakulam after several leaders shifted their loyalties.

Now, the TD leadership is reportedly sending feelers to them indicating that they had no objection if they rejoined the party. The PR leaders fear that the TD was planning to weaken the former so that the latter continues to be a strong Opposition in the next five years. Mr Chiranjeevi, who returned from Chennai, convened a meeting with the former TD leaders on Sunday and discussed the issue with them.

PRP worried about losing senior members

The last two days have been abuzz with rumors that the TDP is getting in touch with leaders who had quit its party and moved into the PRP. According to sources close to the PRP senior leaders like Kala Venkat rao, Thammineni Sitaram, Bhuma Nagi Reddy and Devender Gould have received phone calls from Chandrababu Naidu asking them to return to their mother party. In this context, Allu Arvind has reportedly called in all those leaders for a meeting at his residence and is reported to have assured them that their services will be needed and much appreciated in the party. On their part Thamineni Sitaram dismissed all these rumors as mere media speculation and assured that they will continue to be with the PRP and play a vital role in the opposition. He reiterated that the meeting in Allu Arvind’s residence was scheduled earlier and this topic was never discussed.
